You will discover that the rollicking tale of Shot at Dawn makes it easy to turn page after page until the end.

At its heart, Shot at Dawn is the story of three young British women from different social backgrounds, thrown together as volunteer nurses in Word War I. Caught at the outset of the war behind enemy lines in Belgium, they manage to escape and rejoin the war effort.
What follows is in no way predictable and the many twists and turns of what our three heroines experience will keep the reader spell bound until the end.

Camilla Pearcy, the daughter of Sir John and Lady Anne Pearcy decided to join in the war effort after her 3 brothers had enlisted. As she has no prior nursing experience and possibly also in view of her posh accent matron initially puts her to work cleaning up bed pans and other equally unpleasant duties.

Imogene Chauncey is the only daughter of a family doctor practicing in rural Cornwall. She is assigned to be an ambulance driver, picking up wounded soldiers at the front and delivering them to the make shift hospitals near the front where doctors were available to treat the most urgent cases, undertake critical operations that could not wait and where a decision was made if a soldier could return to the front or had to be sent on for further treatment.

Daisy Collins' dad originally came from Ireland in search of work and had found a job in the docks of London. Her family lived in the East End of London. Daisy had been very lucky to be accepted as a trainee nurse in a local hospital prior to the war. When the war broke out the Red Cross had besieged matron for help. Daisy agrees to volunteer and is assigned to be an operating assistant nurse at an army hospital right at the front.

As they experience the horrors of trench warfare at first hand they become inseparable friends. In parallel the tragic story of Timmy, the youngest brother of Camilla also unfolds.

The dramatic and life changing events that are taking place in the story in World War I are the triggers for transformation at the personal level. The tragic events force a person to confront the inner self, to make decisions without full knowledge of the outcome, to discover what the important values in life are.

Our three heroines transform admirably in the course of the events they experience and the trials and tribulations that the war keeps throwing at them.

Experiencing unexpected hardship and suffering is not a guarantee for coming out
stronger and better at the other end. Shell shock which first came into being in that terrible war shows how the psyche can shut down the system when the trauma is too harsh to cope with. It took almost 100 years before the British government publicly apologized to families where an enlisted son, wandering lost and in search for help, had been shot as a deserter.

World War I provided the spark to transform British Society, the British Class System, and British Colonial hegemony.

As we follow the lives of our heroines we learn how a nation becomes psyched up about a war, how it dehumanizes the enemy and how it willingly allows a whole generation of youth to march into battle and death. The few voices of conscientious objectors are shouted down and when the consequences of war become evident back home, they are simply suppressed or ignored. Public opinion is largely forged by the press which appears incapable or unwilling to be more than a tool of the propaganda machinery of the government. War seems to offer such a welcome escapism from the realities of everyday life. Fighting for what appears to be the good cause, heroic action is irresistibly attractive.

We learn that the military leadership level did not understand the paradigm shift of modern warfare at all and how as a result it turned the youth of 3 nations into cannon fodder. It seems inconceivable that the generals could live in the lap of luxury while the common soldiers and their officers lived in m
