The Crusader is a fantasy novella about Aaron, a once-idealistic knight on a Crusade to rid the Holy Land of unbelievers and their sorcerers has become disillusioned about the war. In a final mission, Aaron faces the massacre of his companions and a betrayal by his own commander. In order to survive, he must face a terrifying assassin and face the truth of the Crusade. Will he find redemption and rediscover his Honor? To do so, he must decide between losing himself and losing his soul.

The Crusader is a taste, a short novel, a whiff of what's to come from J.P. Wilder, a writer new to me, full of talent and promise. The story here is darkest fantasy, shadowy and full of the sounds and sights and feel of war from one fighter's perspective in a world strange and yet familiar. The night battle made my pulse pound. The milieu is sketched with a sure hand as our hero, Aaron, one of the Dark Men, fights the heathen. First-person narrative is strong and tactile, bringing us sense of place and more. The narrator lives, breathes, and fights two battles, one of the body, one of the soul. This story of a skirmish and betrayal and the gift of death has verisimilitude, moral quandary, and a sense of presence quite rare in those writing dark fantasy today. The story rings true, as Rayfe and our hero, Aaron, take us into their world and a virgin teaches a lesson. All things about writing can be learned but the greatest -- the ability to pull the reader out of their world and into the world of the story -- which Wilder has and this tale displays. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, which I believe is a debut outing, and look forward to more adventures of Aaron and his world. Read J.P. Wilder's "The Crusader."

The Crusader JP Wilder 9781461123118 Books Reviews

As a forty page novella, this is a thrilling ride into a world of swords and sorcery. I have heard talk that this will be expanded into a novel, or even a series, and I'll be right there to read it if it is. What we have within these forty pages is two fights and a chase tied together with some deductive reasoning. I'll not spoil anything in this review. Mr. Wilder handles his subject brilliantly, and it would be a treat to see him extend this into a much longer narrative. He can draw your adrenaline with his descriptions of battle, and play on your emotions in a touching scene between ruthless enemies, one with a mortal wound. A thrilling read that can be savored in a single sitting, this is a confection you should allow yourself at the earliest opportunity.
The Crusader takes the reader into the dark underbelly of the Crusades. The protagonist Aaron rides with the “Dark Men” carrying out special covert missions meant to hamper the enemy. These missions are far removed from the battlefield charge, and instead are carried out in darkness to kill all the heathens they encounter. The time Aaron has spent serving among the Dark Men seriously alters his previously held ideas of honor and glory on the battlefield. Yet, by undertaking these missions, Aaron and his companions have been given the promise of absolution for their many sins, and a place in the kingdom of God.

Rayfe the Darkstalker is a vicious killer, who also happens to be the man Aaron must follow on a dangerous mission against an equally deadly adversary. This mission will put both his martial training and his loyalty to the test.

Wilder delivers believable characters, exciting battle scenes and a solid story all around. This was a fast read that held my interest from beginning to end and left me eager for the next book.
I actually downloaded the entirety of this book believing it to be the sample. I read the ‘sample’, enjoyed it, and was going to buy the book before I realised I already had read it all.

The story is 11,000 words, and I was very impressed. It read like a fantasy of the crusades. I particularly liked the heathen sorcery and Dark Men (assassins) aspects of this short story. I found it to be a twist that the Dark Men fought for the Crusaders and not the Saracens.

The story has a lot of fighting and a bit of betrayal. The action was fun to read, and I liked how it ended.

My only annoyance is that I felt I would have to download another book to read the continuation of this story.

Overall, if you like fantasy or the crusades then give this an immediate read!
If you want something that transports you back to a time of honor, chivalry and medieval times with a story of intrigue and deceit, this is the book for you. It was a quick read because of the witty dialogue between the protagonist and the other characters. It is a book that you can read over and over because of the different layers of symbolism and the unanswered questions that arise about each individual. Can't wait to read more from this author.
I am always looking around for a good short story, love to read, but never have enough time for it. Also I like to read historical fiction. This book did neither for me! Story just didn't set my imagination a fire at all. More of a piece that could have been typed out by a college student just trying to met a deadline for a creative writing class.
This is a great dark fantasy read. We are thrust into the tale of Aaron a hedge knight who becomes part of an elite team known as the Darkmen, fighting a holy war versus the heathens. Now this isn't a historical, though it has resonance with those "Crusades" and Wilder does a fantastic job of characterization and granting the feelings of chaos men in war.

Only downside for me was how short this was - but then benefit is a tight story and the sequels are coming on its heels very soon. Blue Eyes at Night! really looking forward to it. Highly recommended for all my S&S friends and readers.
The crusader is the story of Aaron, a "Dark Man" that fights in the name of the Christian God during the crusades. After crossing swords with a mysterious woman, he is given an ultimatum that rattles everything he knows about honor and chivalry.

At only a handful of dozens worth of pages, the Crusader is a rather quite short story. But it is very well written, the author perfectly captures the mindset of what a poor crusader would think and feel. I enjoyed this story as a bite sized piece of Heroic Fantasy and quite agree that if the first volume is anything to go, the Crusader series definitely looks promising.

I wish I could say more but if I did I would be spoiling the story, but the Crusader is definitely an enjoyable read.
